THE MURAL IN THE MAKING

cody mural visitor center cody wyoming visitor's center mormon lds Beginning as just an idea by Lloyd Taggart, who was the bishop of the ward at the time and Glenn E. Nielson, The Mural was completed and signed in 1951.The idea to paint a mural in the round came from Edward T. Grigware, a talented and highly respected artist of the time. He was invited to look at the room with the idea of commissioning him to paint some paintings to hang around the room for decorations.

The mural depicts some of the events in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Mr. Grigware was not a member of the Church, but he spent a full year studying its history in order to obtain a background and feel for his assignment. It then took him almost another year to paint his concept of the remarkable history of the Church.

Mr. Grigware has said: "I have painted the love and respect that I hold in my heart for these indomitable people." The tall figures in the background are the first eight presidents of the Church. The mural begins with a heavenly visitation to Joseph Smith in 1827 and continues chronologically through the building of the famous Mormon temple in Salt Lake City.
